Woodland Handfasting Ceremony & Tipi Reception
When Sarah & Chris got in touch and asked if I would join them for their Applewood Leeds wedding, I’d responded back ‘Yes!’ almost before I’d finished reading their email! They had planned an outdoor handfasting ceremony, to take place in beautiful woodland with a reception held in a pair of tipis. Just close friends and family would attend this intimate celebration.
I arrived at Applewood to find the woodland beautifully decorated and the walkways lined with fairy lights. Chris had already arrived and was greeting guests, and looking a little nervous!
Sarah and her dad arrived in a restored VW camper van and made their way down the winding pathways, before walking down the aisle to stand alongside Chris. Outdoor ceremonies are always a joy to photograph, as there’s so much space for me to move around. This enables me to capture moments from positions that would be impossible in a church or indoor venue. Though trying to move around the woodland without noisily crunching leaves or snapping any twigs was a unique challenge.
After the ceremony, the food and celebrations continued well into the evening. The overcast skies cleared and cast a warm dappled light through the trees as Sarah & Chris took a few minutes away from their guests for some portraits. These two were such fun to work with. I can’t remember the last time I’ve seen anyone laugh and smile quite as much as Sarah did! As it fell completely dark, their first dance took place inside the tipis, their guests watching on and eventually joining in.
