Italy Destination Wedding on Lake Garda

Katie & Adam’s Malcesine Castle wedding on Lake Garda had everything, including some weather.  Lots of weather.  After all, a perfect sunny day is just boring, right?

Their ceremony was due to take place quite late in the day, outdoors, on one of the highest points of the castle, with stunning panoramic views of the lake and town below. But the weather looked to put a stop to that, with an alternative indoor location as a backup.

One of the most enjoyable aspects of documenting weddings abroad is the unavoidable fact that you’re going to get to know everyone involved far more so than with a wedding in the UK.  Having to allow adequate wiggle room for issues such as delayed flights, means I usually arrive a day or two before the wedding.

I joined Katie & family at a hair salon in Malcesine in the early afternoon as the rain poured down.  Katie seemed totally unphased by the weather, and after hair & makeup, we made our way between showers back to their apartment.

Adam was getting ready in the apartment above, and after sneaking past our open door, making an effort not to look inside and accidentally see Katie too soon, he made his way toward Malcesine Castle.

Katie’s mum, Dee, helped with final preparations.  Once everyone dried their tears from the dress reveal, we made our way through the streets of Malcesine towards the castle.  This was a great moment and lead to so many more photographic opportunities than merely arriving at the door in a car.  Everyone we passed congratulated Katie, wished her well, or just stood and admired the dress as we all walked through.  I’m sure a fair few were admiring Katie’s brother’s suit nearly as much!

Malcesine Castle Wedding Ceremony

The ceremony did take place inside, but the beautiful room used was far from a disappointment.  The views over Lake Garda were stunning, as was the light from the enormous windows illuminating Katie & Adam.

After the ceremony and time to mingle with family, we decided to attempt a walk to the very top of the castle, despite the now gale-force winds!  You can see in the photographs below just how windy it was, even inside the tower.

The rain started again as we made our way back to the venue, but just as we arrived the clouds parted and we were greeted with a beautiful sunset.

As the sun disappeared behind the mountains, the food and wine began to flow and the partying began soon after.

This was such a refreshingly laid back wedding, full of wonderful people, and an absolute pleasure to be a part of.  Keep on scrolling and immerse yourself in the fun and emotion of the day.
